How Cutting-Edge Stem Cell Therapy Can Help Spinal Cord Injuries

If you or a loved one has experienced a spinal cord injury and is struggling with ongoing symptoms, you’re not alone. Nearly 300,000 people are suffering from the painful aftereffects of spinal cord injury every year.

Thanks to a cutting-edge treatment called stem cell therapy, you no longer need to live in pain after a spinal cord injury. Board-certified pain management physician Ajit Pai, MD, FIPP, with the support of his skilled team, offers this revolutionary new procedure at his Mishawaka, Indiana practice, Pain Management Group, LLC.

Discover the secret behind stem cell therapy, and how it can help you live pain-free.

What is a spinal cord injury?

A spinal cord injury is any kind of injury that causes damage to your spinal cord vertebrae, discs, ligaments, or your nerves at the end of your spinal canal. Most commonly, spinal cord injuries result from trauma, such as accidents, falls, or traumatic wounds. Diseases such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and cancer can also cause spinal cord injury.

Your spinal cord carries messages from your brain to other parts of your body, so spinal cord injuries can impact your nerve functioning and ability to move easily. Along with pain, spinal cord injuries can impair movement and nerve functioning, ability to feel sensations, and processes in your organs, such as bladder circulatory functioning. These impairments can be temporary or permanent.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy is a type of regenerative medicine that can heal pain and inflammation, among other symptoms. Of all the different types of cells in your body, stem cells are distinctive because they have a unique ability to self-renew. By regenerating, or creating copies of themselves, and by turning themselves into whatever cells your body most needs, they promote rapid self-healing.

During stem cell therapy treatment, Dr. Pai uses these self-healing abilities to promote your body’s ability to heal. This causes a reduction in pain, inflammation, and other symptoms resulting from injuries and degenerative conditions.

How can stem cell therapy help my spinal cord injury?

Stem cell therapy is an effective way to reduce any pain and inflammation you’ve experienced as a result of a spinal cord injury. Recent promising research also suggests some patients can regain additional sensory and motor skills from stem cell therapy after a spinal cord injury.

Because stem cell therapy is a regenerative treatment, your body will continue to respond and heal after the initial stem cell therapy. This allows you to receive long-lasting, minimally invasive pain relief.

What can I expect during stem cell therapy?

Depending on the location and extent of your pain or injuries, Dr. Pai prepares either donated embryonic stem cells or bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) cells for your therapy. Embryonic stem cells can regenerate cells throughout your body, while BMAC cells regenerate into a smaller number of more specific cells and tissues.

Your stem cell therapy is an outpatient procedure that takes place at Pain Management Group, LLC. At the start of your treatment, Dr. Pai begins by prepping your skin. This involves using an antiseptic on the injection site and if necessary to minimize pain, a numbing cream or localized numbing solution.

Next, Dr. Pai injects stem cells into the impacted area of your body. Depending on your treatment plan, you could receive several injections. Stem cell injections aren’t painful but might mildly sting or burn your skin.

You may experience some inflammation after the injection, so Dr. Pai typically recommends temporarily reducing your activity levels after the treatment. You can usually resume your typical routine within a few days.

If you’ve been experiencing pain, inflammation, and other side effects from a spinal cord injury, stem cell therapy can reduce your symptoms and bring you a new, pain-free lease on life.
