Radio Frequency Ablation Q & A

Why do I need radiofrequency ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is beneficial for treating a wide variety of pain-causing ailments. The treatment’s gentle current heats up your nerve tissue, making it less effective. This can improve pain and discomfort like:

  • Neck or back pain
  • Joint degeneration (arthritis)
  • Sciatica or nerve damage

It’s estimated that over 70% of men and women treated with radiofrequency ablation finally get pain relief, especially if other therapies haven’t been effective.

What happens during radiofrequency ablation treatment?

As a pain management specialist with extensive training, Dr. Pai is an expert at radiofrequency ablation treatments. The entire procedure is performed right in the office while you’re relaxed with mild sedation and a local anesthetic.

Using fluoroscopy, or live X-ray imaging for guidance, Dr. Pai places the specialized radiofrequency needle in alongside your medial or lateral branch nerves in your lumbar, thoracic, or cervical regions. This needle sends out a small amount of a safe electrical current to target the nerve directly, without passing through to surrounding nerves.

Once the targeted nerve responds to the current, Dr. Pai introduces radiofrequency waves to heat up the tip of the needle, creating a heat lesion or wound on the nerve. This makes your nerve inactive, so it can no longer send or receive pain signals.

When will I have results after radiofrequency ablation?

While it’s normal to experience a little temporary pain and inflammation after your radiofrequency ablation treatment at Pain Management Group, LLC, you should start noticing a dramatic improvement in your pain level within a few days.

RFA is long-lasting, but it’s not permanent. In most cases, RFA treatments can last up to 6-12 months, sometimes even longer. Since your nerves are always regenerating and regrowing, at some point your treatment is probably going to wear off.

If you start noticing that the benefits of RFA are wearing down, or if you have new pain that develops, you can always schedule an exam with Dr. Pai to see if you’re ready for another radiofrequency ablation treatment.

Schedule your radiofrequency evaluation at Pain Management Group, LLC and get relief from the most chronic pain issues. Either request an appointment online or over the phone.
